Professional-quality impressions from miniature plates cannot be made on cheap, small presses offered to beginners.

Our lightweight Ettan MS-12 is a high precision machine with the design features of our larger presses. The MS-12 has a press bed of 12” x 24” x .25” (30.5 cm x 61 cm x 0.6 cm) and a 4” (10.2 cm) upper roller. Such a large diameter, unusual in small presses, minimizes bed/plate angle, providing a soft drive over the plate. The 2” (5.1 cm) lower roller, made of Cr/MO steel, is driven directly. Both rollers are supported by heavy-duty bearings, each rated at 25,000 lbs (11,350 kg). The MS-12 weighs 40 lbs (18.1 kg); it is shipped in carton by Fedex.

MS-18 Etching Press

The MS-18 has a bed plate of 18" x 36" x .50" (46 cm x 91.5 cm x 1.3 cm). The top roller has a 5" (12.8 cm) diameter. The 2.75" (7.0 cm) bottom roller, made of Cr/Mo steel, has a gear reduction of 4:1 it is driven by a standard crank handle. The MS-18 weighs 90 lbs (41 kg), and is shipped crated by truck freight.

MS-3 Etching Press

The MS-3 bed, 24” x 48.75” x .75” (62 cm x 124 cm x 1.9 cm), is protected with a non-corroding metal sheet, which can also be used to facilitate plate registration. The upper roller has a 6” (15.2 cm) diameter. The lower roller, made of Cr/Mo steel, is 4” (11.5 cm) in diameter. A 12:1 gear reduction provides high torque. Each roller is supported by four bearings, each of which can withstand 55,000 lbs (24,970 kg).

For their size, these presses are truly lightweight - approximately 280 lbs (126 kg). The MS-3’s are offered standard with a drivewheel or optional MU-1 motor unit (M). The presses are shipped crated by truck freight.

MU-1 Motor Unit for MS-3

Most motorized presses are bulky, expensive and work only at a constant speed. Ettan has developed a small, elegant, and economical motor unit with several hard-to-find features. The MU-1 offers continuously variable speed within a range of 14-102”/min (35-255 cm/min), a high speed overrider for rapid movement of the printing bed at 228”/min (570 cm/min) and a sensor which enables the MU-1 to provide sufficient torque even under extremely high loads, and to disengage the motor should an obstacle accidentally come between the roller and the plate. The unit is also protected by a thermal overload switch.

The MU-1 has an on/off switch, a directional handle switch, a speed dial and a switch for temporary high speed override. The 5A motor operates on a 115V/60 Hz line or, with a transformer which we supply, on 220V/50 Hz. It has a pinion shaft identical to that of the Drivewheel, with which it can be interchanged. Ettan keeps a stock of MU-1 units, together with spare parts, to assure service even years after purchase. The MU-1 has a manufacturer’s 90-day warranty backed by Ettan. The MU-1 weighs 15 lbs (6.8 kg) and is shipped in a carton via Fedex or first class mail.
